Pakalana was most likely intorduced to Hawaiʻi by Chinese immigrants. It grows fairly easy with well drained soil and a lot of sun. The plant itself looks like a thin weedy vine that grows over fences, walls, and trellises. While the plant as a whole might not by so eye catching, the flowers, hidden by large heart shaped leaves, bring a beautiful fragrance. The flowers vary from a light green to mustard yellow color, and grow in small clusters.
