We’re excited to introduce Naʻauao, our custom plush of the Pueo—the Hawaiian Short-eared Owl!
Naʻauao, meaning "wisdom" and "knowledge" in Hawaiian, is a perfect name for this golden-eyed native. Unlike most owls, pueo are active during the day, soaring over open spaces and meadows in search of rodents and other small non-native mammals.
Males "sky dance" for females when they are pairing up. Pueo makes soft nests of grass and feathers down on the ground, which is also very unusual for owls. When the owlets hatch, the female stays with the nest while the male brings food. Young owls depend on their parents for about two months. Hawaiʻi, pueo are sometimes revered as ʻaumakua (family guardians), believed to protect, guide, and inspire.
