Joyce graduated from the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa in 1965 in geology. He was a UNESCO volunteer in Nigeria in 1966, where he met his future wife, Chinyere Oguike. His career with the National Park Service spanned thirty-five years and he retired as Chief Ranger at Puʻuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park in South Kona, Hawaiʻi Island.
